Research degrees

We are pleased to receive applications from those interested in pursuing a a research degree in the range of theological disciplines represented amongst our staff team. We draw our supervisors from our Tutorial Staff and from our Research Scholars. Amongst the large supervisory pool of theologians we are able to offer supervision in Biblical Studies, Contextual Theology – including Black Theology and Feminist Theology – Church/Liturgical studies, Missiology, Systematic & Historical Theology, Patristics & Christian Spirituality.

There are two research degrees which can be taken through the Queen's Research Centre.

  • The M.Phil. degree, which can be taken over a period of 18 months full-time or 30 months part-time and involves the production of a 50,000 word thesis. A successful thesis will be ‘an independent, significant contribution to knowledge’.
  • The Ph.D. degree, which can be taken over a period of 36 months full-time or 48 months part-time and involves the production of a 80,000 word thesis. A successful thesis will be ‘an independent, significant and original contribution to knowledge’.

Sabbatical or period of study leave

Queen's staff are always pleased to make arrangements for those who wish to pursue academic study as part of a period of sabbatical or study leave. In making arrangements for sabbaticals and study leave, the needs of the student are held to be paramount. Those who have benefitted from this provision in the past have included clergy, academic theologians, and teachers.

Guided reading and discussion

Queen's staff work with people from the Birmingham and West Midlands area who wish to make use of the opportunities offered by Queens for theological enquiry, without pursuing a formal course of study.
