Online Journals

Staff and students of the Queen’s Foundation are entitled to access a wide range of online journals.

What are 'online journals'?

Online journals are journals published in electronic form. The full text of articles can be viewed online via a web browser. Usually these journals are also published in print form. Queen’s subscribes to 80 print journals, but has access to over 300 titles online.

How do I access them?

Click here to search Ebsco's Religion and Philosophy database of over 300 titles.

If your computer is linked to the Queen's Foundation network, then you will have automatic access to the full text of the Ebsco journals. This should include all staff and student computers on the campus, as well as the computers in the library.

If your computer is not linked to the Queen's Foundation network (e.g. if you want to access online journals from home), then please ask the librarian for the username and password for this service.

What are the advantages of online journals?

There are several advantages:

  • convenience — 30 of our current print subscriptions are now available online, so you don’t need to come to the library to read them.
  • more titles — it’s like having a library five times the size of our journals collection sitting on your desktop.
  • better subject searching — and much quicker than using the printed indexes.
  • full-text link — from article reference to full-text at the click of the mouse.

Are there any drawbacks?

There are a couple of drawbacks to be aware of:

  • back runs vary in length — some titles may only be available in a relatively short run e.g. since 2001
  • delayed full-text — some titles delay making the full-text available for 3 to 12 months (in order to protect their print subscriptions)

Are there any other providers of online journals?

Some journals in the field of religion and theology are freely available online. For example, you may like to look at the titles listed under Journals at the following websites:

Others are made available free of charge only if we subscribe to the print version of the title, but it is worth noting the following providers:

Sage Journals Online is the online journals arm of Sage Publications. Ingenta is an online consortium acting for publishers such as Brill and Oxford University Press. Although you will only be able to access the full text of articles if we subscribe to the print version of the title, you will be able to search for articles from the whole database, and view contents pages and article abstracts for free.

Which print journals are available online?

Thirty of our current print subscriptions are now available online. You can view a list of our current subscriptions via the library website under Current Journals. The columns on the right indicate the range of years which are available online and provide a link to the online source.
