Theological Education Conference, Birmingham 6-9 April 2011

March 9th 2011

World Council of Churches and Selly Oak Centre for Mission studies, Queens Foundation for Theological Education are organising a joint consultation on “International Partnership and Funding Strategies for Theological Education in the Global South and in Eastern Europe: Challenges, Priorities and Collaboration”.

This consultation will be held at Queens College between 6th April to 9th April. This is first of its kind. The main aspiration is to fulfil the aspirations of 2010 Edinburgh Conference where diverse churches and their mission boards wanted to further cooperation in developing theological education around the world.

This initiative is related to a comprehensive process to work for new models of division of labour in the area of ecumenical solidarity in theological education and to strengthen the churches in the regions and Regional Ecumenical Organizations to give more prominence and visibility to the support of theological education as the ways in which WCC can provide support for its member churches and related theological colleges are changing. This is also relevant as the newly formed ACT Alliance does not include theological education as part of its agenda.

The purpose of this conference in Birmingham is

  1. to bring together as many agencies as possible together  in order to find a way forward in sharing their experiences in partnership in theological education and to spell out their policies and goals for better mutual transparency;
  2. to explore possible cooperation and collaboration in funding theological education both regionally and globally and to analyze the changing needs for Christian leadership development and capacity building in a broad understanding of theological competence;
  3. to seek for better ways to support and accompany newly formed regional structures of cooperation in theological education with REOs and associations of theological schools;
  4. to look for future ways of division of labor and sharing of funding with the WCC in the area of theological education.
