English language requirements

All applicants to the college whose main language is not English must either obtain a satisfactory score in a recognised test of English language competence or produce other proof of English language proficiency as a condition of entry. IELTS is the most commonly known test that we use at Queen's, but please refer to the UK visas and Immigration (UKVI) website for further information. The required standard for postgraduate studies validated by Newman University is CEFR B2. Students will need to achieve a score of 5.5 or above in each of the specific categories Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, with an overall band score of 6.0 or above.

Since 2011, the UK Border Agency insists on stricter testing of prospective student’s English language ability. To summarise the UKVI requirements, the student must be a national of a majority English speaking country, have been educated (in English) in a mainly English speaking country, have been educated in the UK for a period of time, or pass an approved English language assessment. IELTS is the most commonly known test, and is the most common test used by Queen’s, but please refer here for further information. The required standard for postgraduate studies validated by Newman University is CEFR B2. At present, we require candidates to have a minimum pass score of 5.5 in each of the specified areas, listening, reading, writing and speaking, though this is subject to change.

Some students have experienced long delays in some countries when trying to book the test, so please make a booking as early as possible. Other students’ experience would suggest that the format of the test is not as easy as one might expect, so please do try to take advantage of as much help as possible. You can undertake the evaluation as often as you wish but, as this is a UKVI requirement, The Queen’s Foundation CANNOT accept you for studies without this vital certificate.
