Deacon Angie Allport

I joined the staff at Queen’s in September 2025, but The Foundation was not new to me as I had previously studied here for ministry from 2012-14. I am a deacon in the Methodist Church and have previously served in church appointments in Harpenden, Hereford and Birmingham. Prior to training for ministry, I had had a twenty-year career in local government. I completed my first degree in theology for my ministerial probationer studies and gained a MRes in theology and religion is 2022. My thesis was on the theology of the cross in the light of the Holocaust. I am passionate about social justice and am a founding member of the Network of Methodist Activists.

Qualifications

Roles at Queen’s

I am one of two diaconal tutors at Queen’s, sharing responsibility for diaconal formation. I also lead the ‘Leadership in Social Justice’ programme and arrange placements for Methodist students. In addition, I co-ordinate Queen’s community meetings and the teaching weekends for second-year ministerial students studying part-time. Going forwards, it is planned that I shall teach Christian ethics.

External roles and responsibilities

I am currently a member of Methodist Church’s Faith and Order Committee.

Research interests

Although my thesis focused on the theology of the cross, I had intended to look at how/whether we can speak of a loving God in cases of extreme suffering, like the Holocaust. I am also interested in both the ethical and spiritual issues around the process of dying.
