Decolonising Mission: Imagining Christian Witness Without Empires
This presentation explores the enduring entanglement between Christian mission and colonial power, and asks what it means to speak of mission faithfully in a post-imperial, migratory age. Drawing on insights from Black theology and global Christianity, I will argue that decolonising mission is not about abandoning mission but about disentangling Christian witness from racial hierarchy, cultural supremacy, and epistemic control. In a time when Christianity is increasingly shaped by diaspora and Majority World communities, the Church is being invited to reimagine authority, leadership, and theological knowledge itself. The evening will consider how Black theological perspectives help us recover mission as mutual, justice-oriented, and accountable to those historically marginalised within the life of the Church.
