Academic information
Queen’s offers the opportunity to study via two discrete training tracks: 'college-style' and 'course-style'. Within each track there are a number of possible pathways. The pathway you take will depend on factors which include:
- your age
- your previous training or qualifications.
Pathways are defined by particular content and they result in different academic awards (such as Certificate, Diploma, BA, MA, etc.).
While we seek to enable candidates to get the best qualification, the priority must always be the best preparation for ordained ministry. Your particular pathway will be agreed between the Academic Dean, the Black Theology, Ministries and Leadership tutor within the Centre for Ministerial Formation, and the Chair of the District Board of Ministerial Development (DBMD) for the Wesleyan Holiness Church.
For some 'illustrative pathways', which combine the expectations of the Academic programme with requirements of the Wesleyan Holiness Church for those training for ordained ministry, click here. They should give you an idea of the broad shape of the kinds of pathways on offer at Queen's.

The Queen’s Foundation has a Validation Contract with Durham University for the validation of approved Common Awards academic programmes and pathways at undergraduate and postgraduate levels:
- Certificate of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission
- Certificate of Higher Education in Christian Ministry and Mission (180)
- Diploma of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission
- Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Theology, Ministry and Mission
- Graduate Diploma in Theology, Ministry and Mission
- Postgraduate Diploma in Theology, Ministry and Mission
- Master of Arts in Theology, Ministry and Mission

Queen's has a Partnership Agreement with Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam for the admission of students onto their PhD programme following completion of a successful stage as a post graduate researcher at Queen’s. Supervision of PhDs is conducted jointly by VU and Queen’s with the majority of research seminars and supervisions taking place at the Queen’s campus.

Students without prior theological studies, who meet the admissions requirements, are likely to be admitted onto the Certificate of Higher Education in Theology, Ministry and Mission in the Common Awards suite validated by Durham University during their initial ministerial training. Successful completion of this programme enables progression to the Diploma in Theology, Ministry and Mission in the Common Awards suite validated by Durham University.
At the end of their initial ministerial training, on successful completion of their studies, students may have the option to receive this award or, with diocesan agreement, to continue to work toward a BA (Hons) in Theology, Ministry and Mission in the Common Awards suite validated by Durham University. Students with prior theological studies, who meet the admissions requirements, may have the opportunity to work at postgraduate or research level during initial ministerial training.
