Who is it for?

This pathway is suitable for anyone interested in Quaker practices including work for social justice and the use of silence.

Programme Overview

The Quaker Studies route is a designated pathway for the Queen’s Postgraduate Certificate in Theology and Transformative Practice validated by Birmingham Newman University. This one year part time programme is taught online, in gathered mode (Saturdays 12pm – 6pm UK time) and is comprised of two modules:

  • QFM719 – Justice in Theory and Practice
  • QFM720 – The Practice of Silence and Spirituality

It is also possible to use these modules as elements in the PGDip or MA in Theology and Transformative Practice.

QFM720 – The Practice of Silence and Spirituality

This module is designed to enable students to explore the uses of silence in religious and spiritual practices. It will increase understanding of the many different significances of silence in liturgical contexts, informal worship, and private spiritual practice. It draws particularly on the Quaker tradition while also attending to other uses of silence, including but not limited to forms of meditation, contemplative prayer, and civic practices such as Remembrance Day silences. There will also be space to explore the negative significance of silence in some situations and how this relates to individual discernment about when to speak or be silent. Students from all faith traditions may find this module helpful, whether or not silence is currently part of their personal or communal spiritual practice.

Assessment:

  • Component 1 (33%) Reflective journal exploring personal engagement with silence in the context of one or more spiritual practices (2000 words)
  • Component 2 (67%) Essay exploring a key theoretical or practical question about the role of silence in one or more spiritual practices (4000 words)

Teaching Dates: One Saturday per month (September to January), 12pm – 6pm UK Time

QFM719 – Justice in Theory and Practice

This module is designed to increase understanding and awareness of the theories and practices of justice operative in different contexts. It enables students to apply a wide range of justice approaches to issues relevant to them, and to engage with informed practice in the particular area. It draws on philosophical traditions in respect of justice, and explores how they have informed and influenced various faith groups and/or religious communities. It then proceeds to explore specific spheres of justice, particularly in relation to matters of social and eco-justice.

Assessment:

  • Portfolio of work illustrating learning and reflection on justice in their context (6000 words)

Teaching Dates: One Saturday per month (February to June), 12pm – 6pm UK Time

Normally a degree qualification, together with relevant experience; or prior theological education to Diploma of Higher Education level, together with relevant previous experience.
